Book an appointment

A tooth is removed when keeping it is no longer the better option: a fracture below the gum, decay past the point a restoration will hold, or advanced periodontal disease.

Simple and complex extractions

Dr. Lal performs simple extractions in office. Complex extractions are referred to an Oral Surgeon located nearby. LAL Dental will assist with coordinating treatment and setting up the appointment.

Planned around the replacement

The important decision is usually not the extraction but what follows it. Bone begins to change shape as soon as a tooth is gone, and how much is left months later determines whether an implant can be placed straightforwardly, needs grafting first, or is no longer the simplest option.

Because this is a Prosthodontic practice, that plan is normally made before the tooth comes out. Where an implant is the likely end point, the socket can be grafted at the time of extraction to hold the site.

Comfort

The area is fully numbed before anything starts. Nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, is available for patients who find the appointment itself difficult rather than the procedure.

Afterwards

You are given written aftercare and a number to call. The first 24 hours matter most: leave the clot alone, avoid smoking and straws, and keep to soft food. Most simple extractions are comfortable within a few days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about tooth extractions at LAL Dental.

Does it hurt?
The extraction itself should not: the area is fully numb before anything begins. Nitrous oxide is available if the anxiety rather than the pain is the problem. Afterwards there is usually soreness for a few days, managed with ordinary pain relief for most people.
What happens to the gap?
This is the part worth deciding before the tooth comes out, not after. Bone in the socket begins to resorb once the tooth is gone, which affects what an implant will need later. Where an implant is likely, the socket can be grafted at the time of extraction to preserve the site.
Can the tooth be saved instead?
Often, and it is the first question rather than an afterthought. Root canal treatment, a crown, or periodontal treatment save many teeth that look hopeless. Extraction is recommended when the tooth is fractured below the gum, too decayed to restore, or so periodontally involved that it is loose.
How long is the recovery?
Most people are comfortable within two or three days for a simple extraction. Avoiding smoking, straws and vigorous rinsing in the first 24 hours matters, because disturbing the clot is what causes the painful complication people have heard about.
