A crown covers and rebuilds a tooth that is too broken, worn or heavily filled to hold a filling reliably.

Modern crowns are made from porcelain and ceramics that mimic the way natural enamel handles light, so a single crown can sit next to natural teeth without announcing itself. That matters most at the front, where a crown has to match a neighbor rather than a photograph.

What a crown is actually doing

A tooth that has lost much of its structure flexes under load, and flexing is what eventually splits it. A crown holds the remaining tooth together and takes the force itself.

Dental crowns are also used to cover a tooth after a root canal, to protect what remains of it.

Getting the fit right

The margin where a crown meets the tooth is where crowns succeed or fail. A gap there collects plaque, and decay under a crown is difficult to detect until it is advanced. The preparation, the impression or scan, and the laboratory work all exist to make that junction as close to invisible as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about dental crowns at LAL Dental.

How long does a crown last?
A well-made crown on a sound tooth commonly lasts a decade and often considerably longer. Lifespan depends much more on the health of the tooth underneath and how you bite than on the crown itself.
Porcelain, metal, or both?
All-ceramic crowns look the most natural and are the default at the front of the mouth. Where a tooth carries heavy load, material choice is a judgement between strength and appearance, and it is made per tooth rather than per patient.
Why did my last crown fail?
Usually not the crown. Decay at the margin, a fracture in the tooth beneath, or a bite that overloads it are the common causes. Replacing the crown without addressing the reason tends to produce the same result again.
